a little more about me…
Following an Honours Degree in Fine Art from the University of Ulster, Belfast, I completed a Master’s Degree in Site-specific sculpture at Wimbledon School of Art, London. I won my first Public Art commission while still at college in Belfast and continued working in Public Art throughout my career. My approach was generally site-specific, considering the site, the physical space, how that space is used, the history of the space and suitable/appropriate materials.
I also create work on a smaller more personal scale for exhibition and commission. Recent work is becoming more abstract, capturing fleeting moments and movement that reveal simple human truths. I am concerned with form and the relationships and meanings between form and space.
Recently I made a deliberate move away from Public Art to focus on creating sculpture for exhibition and wearable sculpture. Transferring my skills from large scale metal work and casting to smaller scale more intimate work. I am interested in exploring the materiality of precious materials to handcraft small pieces of art to wear.
Drawing has always formed a central part to my practice, to form and express ideas. I have been tutoring classes in Experimental drawing for over 12 years, where the focus is on the process and exploring drawing/expanded drawing as an immediate and spontaneous form of expressing ideas and more importantly a way of getting in touch with your innate creativity, improving mood, reducing stress and enhancing well being.
I have also worked extensively in the field of Arts in Health; as an Arts Coordinator in Nobles Hospital, IOM and as an Artist for Artscare. I strongly believe in the benefits of being creative on health and well being.
